WRESTLING WITH STUFF

Text:  Ecclesiastes 2:4-8;  5:10-16

This lesson is about the place and power of material possessions in our lives.

I have a lot of stuff.  2:4-8

I want more stuff.  5:10-14

I don’t want to leave my stuff.  5:15-16

Study the texts using the following questions.

1. In 2:4-8, Solomon makes a list of some of the stuff he accumulated.  Before proceeding with this lesson, build a list of your stuff.  Include all your money (even in savings), property, jewelry, vehicles, etc.  Keep this list in front of you as you study these passages.

2. Would you consider Solomon:  poor,  getting by,  rich,  very rich?  What do you consider yourself?  Why?

3. Ecclesiastes 5:10-14 identifies several problems with money.  Check the problems these verses deal with:  __ never having enough,  __ more you get the more you want, __ keep you awake, __investments go bad.  Which of these negative symptoms of being rich have you experienced?

4. How much of your stuff will you take with you when you die?  How should this effect your attitude toward what you have?

5. In 5:16, what does Solomon identify as a “sickening tragedy”?
